“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
– Nikola Tesla
More and more we find ourselves facing the day with overwhelming floods of information, increasing pressures to perform, and insatiable to-do lists. We often complain that there are “not enough hours in the day,” and we are constantly reminded of the old adage “Time is money.” We find ourselves moving at a pace based on the scarcity of time—trying to make up for lost time and living under the dark cloud of the concept that there is never enough time to accomplish everything in our lives that we are supposed to do.
Whether or not we would benefit from longer days or longer lives, the quality of our energy is ultimately more valuable than the amount of time we have if we wish to make the most of our days, accomplish our goals, or live a fulfilling life. This is especially true when we are trying to optimize our performance, be fully present in our relationships, or cultivate the higher levels of creativity and innovation required to thrive in a highly disruptive and competitive environment.
How many times have you tried to write an article, dive into business plan, or rock your way to a pressing deadline while you felt exhausted—either from staying up with a crying baby, from a hangover after one too many glasses of fine wine, or by the mental replay of an emotional conflict with your partner? Do you ever find yourself stuck in the mud of frustration after a long day of distractions? Do you repeatedly linger on the error side of trial and error?
And yet, we’ve all had those “aha’ moments, too—when a flourish of ideas enters our mind faster than we can move the pen across the page. Times when we experienced a sudden burst of energy that made us want to leap into action. Or days when we felt in “the flow” and were able to move fluidly through challenging tasks with vitality and joy.
While we can’t control the world around us, we can take charge of that which most impacts our experience: our inner world.
Staying creative, balanced and competitive in the midst of continual disruptions however, requires an incredible amount of high quality and sustainable energy. The good news is that this kind of energy is available to us. We simply need to learn to optimize and master it.
Our personal warehouse of energy, and our capacity to generate it, is the No. 1 source of currency that enables us to unleash our creativity and take meaningful action in the world. It is the fuel we require for executing innovative ideas, and for turning visions and dreams into realities.
Imagine if you had an unlimited supply of positive energy and that you could tap into it, on-demand, at any time. You’d be unstoppable. When it comes to our own energy—the higher the quality, and larger the reserve, the better. There is no question about—energy is vital, not only to our fulfillment, but to our existence.
Vitality, by definition, distinguishes the living from the dead. And if we are going to spend our time among the vital ones, we might as well do it as fully and joyfully as possible. From the Latin term vitalitas, vitality is our capacity to grow and live with enthusiasm, vigor and exuberance.
But how do we generate and stimulate the flow of that energy – that source of vitality – on a more consistent basis. How do we harness our own personal energy on demand, even when factors in our external environment seem to drain us of our capacity to do so?
Energy, by its nature, is subtle and can often seem illusive. Health Coach Jonny Bowden, in his book The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost your Energy, says “trying to get more energy is like trying to grab a fistful of water.” What is most important, he goes on to say, is to create the conditions through which you can hold the water or, in other words, maintain optimal energy.
How can we create those conditions and maintain the internal state and optimal energy required to perform and flourish in our work and lives? Bowden tells us that we create these conditions through our habits and practices—the way we eat, how we sleep, the relationships we keep, our choice of thoughts and words, how much and how we move, our commitment to a restorative or meditation practice, and even the music we listen to.
In my life and work, I have had to develop a system of practices and techniques to help me stay inspired and rise above unfavorable external conditions. I have turned to the teachings of ancient wisdom, studied the findings of modern science, and been guided by incredible teachers along my path.
The human system is at once miraculous, vast and complex. It therefore takes a comprehensive approach to optimize our energy. Good sleep, a nourishing diet, meaningful relationships, regular exercise, a meditation practice, positive emotions, self-expression, music and art, and a sense purpose are all part of the optimal energy toolkit.
I encourage you to learn and apply all you can in service of regulating and enhancing your energy. And I invite you to remove from your world, inside and out, any thoughts or habits that might be unnecessarily depleting it. I can assure you that the time and effort you invest to integrate good energy habits into your daily life will pay you back in multiples in productivity, happiness, vitality and longevity.
