In a workshop on dance, music and movement last week I learned something about physiological development that both moved me and opened me up to a whole new perspective around the healing potential of music. The first organ that forms for a human embryo is the heart. That is not so surprising. But what I learned that day is that the next organ to form is the tongue. For me this was powerful – both as science and as metaphor. The connection of our tongue to our heart is apparent and profound. And with music, the act of singing – especially singing a piece of music we feel passionate about, creates a vibratory and transformational channel between the tongue and the heart that is like no other.
A few days ago, I help produce the Los Angeles inaugural event for a national program call Yoga for Hope, promoting the healing benefits of alternative therapies – Yoga, meditation and MUSIC – to help with the prevention of and recovery from life-threatening diseases. It was clear that it was the live music that provided the common thread and the container for the community to move together with their collective intention set on healing. Fortunately, many great artists also recognize the healing and transformative power of music, which allowed me to create a special CD compilation for the Yoga for Hope events called Music for Hope.
Music is a healer. Our souls and bodies can be nourished by it’s vibrations, or culturally starved without it. It is one of the few forms of communication we have that can bypass the left brain, slip through the subconscious and go directly to the heart – in a matter of a few minutes.
Start your day by singing a song you know and love. I can guarantee, from my heart to yours, it will be a better day.
