When Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis co-founded Singularity University (SU) a decade ago, they gave center stage to Exponential Technologies.
Enrolling some of the most brilliant minds in the field, they set out on their mission to change the course of humanity by helping entrepreneurs and leaders take on some of the world’s most difficult challenges through the application of exponential technologies. The audacious goal marker used to inspire the thousands of entrepreneurs that have attended SU’s programs, including myself, was to “create something that can positively impact the lives of a billion people in 10 years.”
I had the privilege of attending my first Executive Program at SU’s NASA Aims campus in 2011, and presenting before the faculty and alumni of their Graduate Studies Program the following year. In that presentation, I introduced a new lens to the attendees: the necessity to integrate the Technologies of Emotion to successfully achieve those audacious goals.
At the core of the Technologies of Emotion are music and storytelling – together forming one of the most powerful combinations to reach and emotionally engage a billion people.
The marriage of exponential technology with the technologies of emotion and the use of major media channels creates the perfect triple-threat for accelerating change on a global scale.
In 2014, I presented my first workshop as one of the guest faculty of the Exponential Medicine Conference. Founded by Dr. Daniel Kraft, Exponential Medicine is Singularity University’s summit that addresses solutions for the world’s greatest health challenges. At last year’s conference, there was a common sentiment for further humanizing treatments and solutions, as breakthroughs in new technologies create amazing opportunities for helping humanity live better, longer, healthier lives. I had the opportunity to speak on one of my favorite subjects: Music and Health.
More that a dozen years before co-founding SU, with the creation of XPRIZE, Peter Diamandis had unveiled another formula for turbocharging solutions to humanity’s grand challenges: combining the use of exponential technologies with crowdsourcing and large cash prizes. Since that day, people around the world have competed for the XPRIZE by taking on moonshots from private space flight to global literacy.
This past year was a special year for the future of health care. XPrize took on some new challenges, and we introduced both the Cancer and Alzheimer Xprize’s to the Exponential Medicine conference audience. These are two issues close to my heart, and ones in which music can already play significant role.
You can watch an excerpt from my talk in the following video, and hear an amazing unplugged performance by my dear friends and Australian recording artists, the Brothers Koren, who joined me for the presentation.
This week, nearly 350 Visioneers (entrepreneurs, CEO’s, subject matter experts, and heads of state) gathered at Xprize in LA to determine the next set of XPrize’s. One of yesterday’s highlights was the announcement of Anoushen Ansari as the new CEO. Following on the heals of the XPrize session is the next Exponential Medicine Conference on Coronado Island in San Diego, where over 1000 leaders in health and technology come together to explore the future of health care through the use of Exponential Technologies.
It has been both an honor and humbling to be among such an esteemed, brilliant and dedicated collection of hearts and minds committed to improving the health and wellbeing of humanity. With people like this working tirelessly to make the world a better place, I am able to be a bit more optimistic about our collective future.
